Fashion post: Sound of Music Cosplayers

Today, I bring you how you solve a problem like Mariam. Well, actually, I don't, because the problem is all a little bit WTF, really. Our story begins with Mariam, who has just discovered that the hills are alive:

She belongs - currently - to a very avant-garde convent. The Georgian Apostolic Orthodox Church does have monasteries, so it seems possible, even likely, that there are convents, though I remain distressingly ignorant on whether white lace tights are commonplace. I like to think that Mariam discovered that the hills were alive when a particularly enterprising outcrop attempted to bite her, and tore away the bottom half of her skirt. I do rather like frothy neck and wrist ruffles on other people, and I think this is an excellent example of the foamy, sheer sort.

I understand that, when one formally leaves a convent, one is clothed in the things that other nuns wore when they arrived. Clearly, one of the other nuns arrived fresh from her job as a cleaner at clown hospital.

Luckily, she manages to change into something more suitable before she arrives at the household of her widowed Georgian Navy Captain. I know that fashion is kind of going through a moment of matchy matchy, but I rather think that picnic blanket midi skirt/tight/belt combo with tea towel shirt is perhaps taking it a little too far (here is a rather nice example I don't despise, and this is a pretty good example of the pencil skirt and crop version).

This is clearly after she makes new outfits from curtains, only she also stripped the upholstery from the chairs in the attic too. I think this would look better if tiered rather than layered, as the fabric kind of has an inverted silhouette that doesn't quite work for me.

This is her, fleeing from the manor on the Discovery of Feelings. I like to think that the unnecessary orange bodysuit underneath the lovely pleating of the dress is indicative of her virginal panic, but is probably just representative of the unfortunate modern trend towards visible underwear. This dress has some nice pleating at the back, and, I imagine, sits nicely over the collarbones at the front and has those bold, structural shoulders. It needs a well-fitting, equally nicely structured, underdress, in either the nude colour of the skin concerned, or possibly (depending on the opacity of the dress) a bold contrast.

And her dashing naval captain had to come and fetch her from the convent. Doesn't she gaze on him with joy? And carnal lust?

And in amazing fashion photography proof that one can't judge a book by its cover, here she is after tasting conjugal felicity. I like the gold brocade and the nod to her previous nun's habits in the caped yoke.

Another view of her and her husband, the dashing naval captain? This certainly makes more sense as a costume than their traveling clothes. I know Mariam doesn't play any instruments in their final, Nazi-fleeing, performance, but clearly she could. I am unable to find the national flower of Georgia, which is a great disappointment to me. I like the two styles of polka dots here, in the main fabric and in the ribbon edging the bodice, and I like the slight ruching in the shoulders.

Of course she finds time to change before they start their flight. Her expression is the result of realising that no matter how unexpectedly sexually satisfying her husband is, he has distinct deficiencies in planning to transport nine people over the mountains. I love a bit of print mixing, and this is a moderately successful example. I think maybe they could have held off on the printed/embroidered stockings, but it's a nice dress, that looks comfortable.

So, there we have it. I've played a little fast and loose with the movie, but that played fast and loose with the actual story anyway, and I think the fantastical interpretation is entirely appropriate in a fashion spread that is in itself a particularly weird example of fashion being shot on location. This was printed in Vogue Japan, which does make a nice change from the general trend of western magazines sending models to Asian countries to look interesting amid the exotic surrounds of tea houses and temples, but I wonder if Tourism Georgia saw an uptick in Japanese tourists?

Making up stories like this is probably the only way of making sense of this kind of inexplicable fashion spread. It's highly entertaining in any case! Sadly I can't say the same of the clothes. Most of them look quite dowdy to me. Everything is so limp and depressing-looking. Except the matchy-matchy chequered one - that one is rather fun.

I think the naval captain was a good influence because the clothes improved when he came on the scene... I quite liked the gold brocade! As for the matched prints, she would probably blind anyone who looked at her for long. Like you, I like some matched prints, but those blocks are just way over the top!!
